On Tuesday, 15th April 2025, the Department of English, Government Hrangbana College, in collaboration with the Department of English, Government Champhai College, successfully organised a Faculty Exchange Programme that brought together teachers and students to engage in meaningful academic discourse. This event, held at Government Champhai College, underscored the importance of cross-institutional collaboration in fostering intellectual growth and enhancing the educational experience of both faculty and students alike. The programme was designed to highlight the rich cultural and historical narratives of Northeast India, with a particular emphasis on memories and cultural narratives, and to strengthen academic ties between the two colleges.

The Faculty Exchange Programme commenced with opening addresses from the heads of both institutions, Miss Zomuani Cherpoot and Miss Zorinsangi, who provided insight into the significance of such collaborative efforts. Following the introductory speeches, the academic portion of the programme commenced with two lectures given by Dr.C.Lalrinfeli and Sir Zochhuanmawia, each offering distinct perspectives on the narratives of Northeast India and their profound cultural implications.

The first lecture was delivered by Dr.C.Lalrinfeli, a faculty member from Government Hrangbana College on “Unravelling Memory’s Tapestry: A Study of Northeast Narratives,” the lecture delved into the significance of memory in shaping collective identities in the region. She explored how oral traditions, folk tales, and lived experiences have become essential components of the collective memory of the people of Northeast India. Drawing upon various examples from Mizo and Adi folklore and oral histories, she discussed how memories serve as a living archive, preserving not only historical events but also the cultural values, traditions, and practices of indigenous communities.

The second lecture, presented by Sir Zochhuanmawia, a faculty member from Government Hrangbana College, focused on “Cultural Narratives of Northeast India: Easterine Kire’s Fictions.” This lecture highlighted the rich cultural mosaic of the region, touching upon the diverse ethnic groups, languages, and customs that collectively define Northeast India. The speaker addressed the role of literature, both written and oral, in weaving together the cultural fabric of the region. The lecture particularly emphasised the power of storytelling in transmitting values, traditions, and struggles, offering insight into how cultural narratives have evolved over time, especially in the context of modernity and social change. He also brought attention to the growing need to preserve these cultural narratives in the face of globalization, technological advancement, and the challenges posed by the homogenization of cultural identities.

As the event drew to a close, a discussion panel was held, inviting faculty members, students, and participants to reflect on the themes raised in the lectures. The panel discussion focused on how these narratives of memory and culture could be further explored. The panellists also highlighted the importance of such exchange programmes in fostering greater mutual respect, understanding, and collaboration between institutions, and in creating platforms for meaningful dialogue on the pressing issues facing the region. In their closing remarks, the heads of the two colleges expressed their gratitude to all the faculty members and students who contributed to the success of the event. They reaffirmed their commitment to continuing such collaborative efforts and ensuring that the voices and stories of Northeast India receive the attention and respect they deserve within the academic community.

The Faculty Exchange Programme organised by Government Hrangbana College and Government Champhai College was an exemplary showcase of academic collaboration, intellectual exchange, and the celebration of Northeast India’s rich cultural heritage. By focusing on narratives of memory and culture, the event not only fostered a deeper understanding of the region's unique identity but also provided a platform for further academic exploration and cultural preservation. As both colleges move forward with similar initiatives, this programme will undoubtedly serve as a model for future academic collaborations that enrich the educational experience and contribute to a more inclusive, globally aware academic community.
