The Mizo Department of Govt. Hrangbana College, Aizawl commemorated International Mother Language Day (Matribhasha Diwas) on February 24, 2025 01:00 PM at Conference Hall. The originally designated date of February 21st fell on a day when college internal examinations were being conducted, requiring the department to reschedule the observance to the following Monday, February 24th 2025. This adjustment ensured maximum student participation in this important event.
The program commenced with Mr. Laltlanmawia, Asst. Professor, Mizo Department presiding over the proceedings as chairperson. The department was honored to have Prof. Laltluangliana Khiangte, Dean & Sr. Professor, School of Language and Humanities from Mizoram University (MZU) as the esteemed resource person for the occasion. Prof. Khiangte delivered an insightful and engaging presentation that underscored the multifaceted importance of the mother tongue, particularly in the context of preserving cultural identity, fostering intellectual growth, and promoting social cohesion. He eloquently articulated the significance of linguistic heritage and its role in shaping individual and collective identities.
A key message conveyed during the presentation was the imperative for students to utilize correct and proper Mizo language, not only in their academic writing but also in their online interactions on various social media platforms. Prof. Khiangte emphasized the need to uphold the integrity and purity of the language in all forms of communication, especially in the digital realm where linguistic distortions and informal abbreviations often proliferate. He encouraged students to be mindful of their language use and to serve as ambassadors for the Mizo language.
Following the presentation, a lively and interactive question-and-answer session was held. Students actively engaged with Prof. Khiangte, posing thoughtful questions and seeking clarification on various aspects of language preservation and usage. This exchange provided a valuable opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of the issues discussed and to gain further insights from the resource person's expertise.
The successful program concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by Ms. HD Lalrinkimi, HoD and Asst. Professor. She expressed the department's sincere gratitude to Prof. Khiangte for his illuminating presentation and to all the students and faculty members who contributed to the success of the International Mother Language Day celebration. The event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving and promoting the Mizo language and its rich cultural heritage.
