MZU Sports Report: Govt. Hrangbana College Dominates 23rd Annual Sports Meet

The 23rd Annual Sports Meet of Mizoram University took place from March 17 to 21, bringing together 19 participating colleges. The event featured seven sports disciplines: Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Athletics, Table Tennis, Badminton, and Chess. All events except Chess had separate categories for men and women, with a total of 13 gold medals up for grabs.


Govt. Hrangbana College emerged as the overall champions for the third consecutive time, securing an impressive 8 gold medals and 3 silver medals. The college competed in all events and excelled in Football (men and women), Volleyball (women), Basketball (men), Athletics (men and women), Table Tennis (men and women), and Badminton (women).

Competition Highlights:

The sports meet commenced on March 17 with Table Tennis, Badminton, and Chess events. Volleyball and Basketball matches started on March 18, followed by Football matches.

Table Tennis: The men's team faced PUC in the finals and emerged victorious in a thrilling deciding set, while the women’s team lost to PUC with a score of 3-0.

Basketball (Men): On March 20, Govt. Hrangbana College defeated PUC 78-72 in a competitive final.

Football: The final matches were played on March 21 at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium. The men’s team won against PUC with a commanding 4-1 victory, while the women’s team also triumphed against PUC with a 2-0 score.

Chess: The competition concluded on March 18, with Govt. Hrangbana College and GAC tying in points. However, as per the tournament rules, GAC claimed the top spot.

Volleyball: The men’s team faced GAC in the final but lost in the deciding set, while the women’s team secured a hard-fought victory against GAC in the deciding set.

Athletics: Both men’s and women’s teams clinched gold in their respective events, further solidifying the college’s dominance in track and field.

Recognition and Closing Ceremony

The closing ceremony took place after the Football final, where MZU Sports Board Chairman Dr. Saugata Sarkar distributed prizes. The event marked the 23rd edition of the MZU Sports Meet, with Govt. Hrangbana College securing the overall championship title for the 10th time.

The successful event brought together colleges from various regions, providing a platform for athletes to showcase their talents. Govt. Hrangbana College expressed gratitude to the MZU Sports Council for organizing the event and acknowledged the contributions of its Principal, players, coaching staff, sports in-charge, student leaders, and supporters. The college looks forward to continuing its legacy of excellence in future competitions.
