On Thursday, 17th April, 2025, the Department of English, Government Hrangbana College hosted a remarkable event at the Conference Hall, Government Hrangbana College. The event not only celebrated academic excellence but also recognized the creative potential of students. The occasion brought together students and faculty members to appreciate the hard work and dedication of students who had achieved a remarkable feat in their academic pursuits. Additionally, the event marked the announcement and award ceremony for the Creative Writing Competition, a platform that provided students with the opportunity to showcase their literary talents. It is noteworthy that the gifts presented to meritorious students as well as the prizes of Creative Writing Competition  were contributed by faculty members of the Department of English.

The event began with an air of excitement as the Head of  Department, Ms Zomuani Cherpoot addressed the audience, expressing pride in the academic achievements of the students and extending warm congratulations to the meritorious students who had secured a GPA of 8 or higher.  

The highlight of the event was the felicitation of eight meritorious students who had secured GPA of 8 or above in their recent academic assessments. In recognition of their achievements, each student was felicitated by presenting with a gift. These students were commended for their relentless dedication to their studies and their exemplary academic performance. Their success serves as a source of inspiration to their peers and highlights the importance of perseverance and discipline in achieving academic goals.

Creative Writing Competition: A Platform for Expression

Following the felicitation of the meritorious students, the focus shifted to the Creative Writing Competition, a significant part of the event that sought to recognize and reward the creative talents of students. The creative writing competition was not restricted to a specific theme as the absence of a fixed theme empowered the students to choose topics that were meaningful to them, thus producing a diverse array of writing. It also allowed students the freedom to explore their creativity and express themselves through various literary forms, including poetry, short stories, and articles. The chair person and also the head of the Department, Ms Zomuani Cherpoot acknowledged the judges who had meticulously evaluated the submissions, ensuring that each piece was assessed on its merits. She encouraged the students to continue pursuing their passion for writing, as it is not only a powerful means of self-expression but also a vital tool for social change and personal growth.

The competition had been divided into three main categories: poetry, short story, and article. In accordance with the competition guidelines outlined in the advertisement flier, the prizes for each category were awarded as follows:

  1. First Prize – Certificate and a cash prize of ₹1500
  2. Second Prize – Certificate and a cash prize of ₹1000
  3. Third Prize – Certificate and a cash prize of ₹700
  4. Consolation Prize – Certificate and a cash prize of ₹500

All participants were also acknowledged for their efforts and were awarded a certificate along with a cash prize of ₹100 to encourage their continued participation in such academic and creative endeavours.
